The Patriots: To Deflate or not to Deflate
There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding the Patriots’ deflated footballs during the AFC Championship game. Was it purely an accident? Was it deliberate cheating by the Patriots? Was it organized by Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and Quarterback Tom Brady?
Was it a rogue equipment manager? The weather? Or some other sort of miraculous interference?
Having played in the NFL for 6 seasons, covered the league as a radio and television reporter for two decades, and having authored the book “Rookies and Bookies”, I tend to believe that this type of situation is rarely an accident. It’s usually caused by deliberate cheating.
“Rookies & Bookies” is a work of fiction, but it takes you inside NFL locker rooms, out onto NFL fields and on board NFL charter flights to show you exactly why the NFL employs dozens of former FBI agents to police the game and ensure the integrity of the outcomes. This book shows you exactly the ways in which players, coaches and owners “try” to fix the direction of the games.

In 2004, Sourcebooks published Reggie Rivers’ novel “4th & Fixed”. That book went out of print several years ago, and eventually, the rights reverted back to Reggie. “Rookies & Bookies” is a republication of that book. The title and cover art of “4th & Fixed” had to change, because the publisher still owned the previous title. “Rookies & Bookies” and “4th & Fixed” are the same story.
